HVO – A Great Renewable Energy Option

You may have heard of HVO, but do you know the full advantages of converting from mineral diesel to HVO Diesel? Learn why this fossil-free fuel might be a great renewable fuel option for you and your company.

Also known as Renewable Diesel, HVO is a paraffinic fuel which is free of fossil fuels and may be used as a substitute for mineral diesel fuel within your company. HVO or  ‘Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil,’ as the name implies, is derived from vegetable oils through a specialised hydrotreatment process. Hydrotreating vegetable oils is a present-day method of producing high-quality diesel fuels from 100% renewable ingredients. This FAME-free fuel can always be regrown whenever stock is required.

The advantages of switching to HVO to fuel your business are endless! Some of the main benefits include:
  • Increasing your corporate social responsibility and improving your green credentials by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.
  • Reduced particulate production during combustion minimises the ageing of engine oils and therefore produces cleaner air.
  • Tried and tested product; it’s clean, safe and endorsed by a wide range of OEMs.
  • Using HVO can significantly reduce Nitrogen Oxide, Particulate Matter and Carbon Monoxide emissions.
  • No tank cleaning or engine modifications. Simply order HVO into your existing storage facilities and go.
  • This fossil-free fuel is a key factor in helping the UK reach its net-zero carbon target – you can check on ‘Carbon Calculator’ how much CO2 you’d save when switching from fossil fuels to HVO.
  • Fully biodegradable, non-toxic and sustainable.
  • HVO has a reduced need for regular testing due to its renewable properties.
  • Has a longer storage life than regular diesel.

You can use this renewable fuel option in many industries, including portable transport, rail events, construction and concerts. For example, this year at Glastonbury Festival, they stated that ‘all generators across the Festival site – including those that power the Pyramid Stage – will run on sustainable, renewable palm oil-free HVO fuel, made from waste cooking oil, helping to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent.’

To put this significant CO2 emission reduction into perspective:
For every 1,000 litres of diesel burned, you will produce 3.6 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide and  for every 1,000 litres of HVO burned, you will produce 0.195 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (1 tonne of diesel is equivalent to 120,000 smartphone charges)

Reducing your CO2 Emissions

Reducing your carbon dioxide emissions is one of the most effective ways that you can help the environment. Increasing emissions are causing rising temperatures, tropical storms, wildfires, melting ice caps, and other unique weather patterns. Keeping CO2 emissions low not only improves our air quality which keeps us healthier for longer, but also plays a significant role in the larger fight against global warming.

HVO is one of the most efficient fuel sources to use to keep your engines running, whilst keeping you and your business’s carbon footprint as low as possible in the process. You can use HVO in your commercial boilers, portable generators at events, festivals and film productions, construction equipment and machinery, industrial trucks and tankers just to name a few.
