A heating oil delivery is usually simple, but a few checks can help avoid delays. Before your delivery day, make sure the driver can safely access your tank and that there is enough room in the tank for the oil you have ordered.
Use this checklist to prepare for your next heating oil delivery.
Before You Place Your Order
Before ordering, check:
- Your current oil level
- Your tank capacity
- How much space is available in the tank
- The minimum order amount
- Whether you need standard or premium kerosene
- Any access issues at your property
Try not to guess your tank level. Over-ordering can delay delivery if the tank cannot safely take the full amount.
Check Delivery Access
The tanker driver needs safe access to your heating oil tank.
Before delivery, make sure:
- Gates are unlocked
- The route to the tank is clear
- Vehicles are not blocking access
- Pets are kept indoors
- The tank can be reached safely
- Steps, paths or driveways are not slippery
- The driver knows about any access restrictions
If your property has narrow lanes or tight access, tell your supplier when you order.
Check the Tank Area
The area around your tank should be clear and safe.
Remove or move:
- Garden furniture
- Bins
- Tools
- Plant pots
- Overgrown branches
- Trip hazards
- Snow, ice or leaves where possible
The driver may not be able to fill the tank if it is unsafe to access.
Check Your Tank Condition
Before delivery, look for obvious signs of damage.
Do not accept a delivery if you notice:
- A strong oil smell
- Cracks in the tank
- Bulging or distortion
- Leaks or stains
- Damaged pipework
- An unstable base
Ask for advice before using the tank again.
On Delivery Day
You do not always need to be home, but the driver must be able to access the tank safely.
Make sure everything is ready before the tanker arrives.
