Domestic Heating Oil vs Other Heating Options

Domestic heating oil is a common choice for homes that are not connected to mains gas. It is stored in a tank at your property and used by an oil-fired boiler to provide heating and hot water.

If you are comparing heating oil with other options, the right choice depends on your home, budget, location and existing heating system.

Heating Oil

Heating oil is often used in rural homes and off-grid properties.

It can be a good option because:

  • It provides strong heat output
  • Deliveries can be arranged when needed
  • It works well with many existing central heating systems
  • It is widely available in rural areas
  • Modern oil boilers can be efficient when serviced properly

You will need space for a tank and will need to monitor your oil level.

Mains Gas

Mains gas is common in towns and cities. It is supplied directly to the property, so there is no need for a fuel tank.

However, many rural properties do not have access to the mains gas network. If your home is off-grid, connection may not be possible or may be expensive.

Electricity

Electric heating can be simple to install and does not need fuel deliveries. It can be useful for smaller homes or rooms used less often.

However, electric heating can be more expensive to run, especially in larger or poorly insulated homes.

LPG

LPG is another option for homes without mains gas. Like heating oil, it is stored at the property and delivered by tanker.

LPG can work well for heating and cooking, but you may need a suitable storage tank and supplier agreement.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps use electricity to move heat from the air or ground into your home. They can be efficient, but they may need good insulation and larger radiators to work well.

Installation costs can also be higher than replacing a like-for-like oil boiler.

Which Option Is Best?

Heating oil may be suitable if:

  • Your home is off the gas grid
  • You already have an oil tank and boiler
  • You want strong heating performance
  • You have space for fuel storage
  • You want flexible fuel deliveries
