Oil heated households set to have a warm home this winter

DECC logo

Homes that use oil heating are set for a warmer winter this year as the latest data shows households are taking advantage of low oil prices and keeping their heating on for longer*.

The report from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) shows an average 16% increase in the consumption of heating oil by households since the start of the year, revealing that usage has been steadily increasing as the price of oil has fallen, with households less concerned about the price of turning up the thermostat.

The good news will be welcomed by bill payers across the UK and it is hoped that the lower price of heating oil will also help reduce the number of excess winter deaths in the country, which often resulted from people living in poorly heated homes.

Based on the annual heating costs for a typical three bedroom house**, oil is currently £200 less than mains gas and over £700 cheaper than LPG and electric heating, the other main forms of heating used by off-gas grid households. The price of oil is predicted to remain low for the foreseeable future.

Malcolm Farrow of OFTEC, the UK trade body for oil heating, said: “This latest report is excellent news for off-gas grid homes and shows that the huge fall in the price of oil is having a real impact on people’s lives as households aren’t having to risk their health by turning their heating down to save money.”

With the cold months just around the corner, OFTEC is reminding households of the key steps to take so they can ensure a warm home this winter:

  • Have your boiler serviced and oil tank inspected by an OFTEC registered technician to avoid any breakdowns over winter
  • Bleed your radiators to ensure your system is working efficiently
  • Consider upgrading to a modern, condensing boiler
  • Make sure you have enough oil in your tank
