Flexible Energy for Off-Grid Living

LPG for Your Home

Domestic LPG is stored in a purpose-built bulk storage tank at your property and may be installed above ground or underground, depending on your home and the space available.

LPG provides a versatile, efficient off-grid energy solution and can be used for heating, hot water, cooking and fueling household appliances.

In most cases, your LPG supplier owns the tank and is responsible for its ongoing maintenance. If you decide to switch supplier, there’s usually no need to replacee the tank, helping to make theprocess simple and straightforward.

Our experienced team will guide you through every stage of the switch, handling the arrangements on your behalf and helping to ensure a smooth transition to your new LPG supply.

How Does a Domestic LPG Tank Work?

Understanding Your LPG Tank

LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, is delivered by tanker and stored as a liquid inside a purpose-built tank at your property. The tank may be positioned above ground or installed underground, depending on the space available and installation requirements.

When your boiler, hob or another LPG appliance is used, liquid LPG inside the tank changes into vapour. The vapour passes through a regulator, which controls its pressure, before travelling through service pipework to your home. This happens automatically, so using LPG feels much like using mains gas.

A gauge on the tank shows approximately how much LPG remains. During a delivery, the tanker driver connects a hose to the filling point and tops up the tank. Safe access and a clear route to the tank are important.

In most domestic arrangements, the LPG supplier owns the tank and is responsible for inspecting and maintaining it. The homeowner buys the LPG and may pay tank rental. Your supply agreement will explain the charges and responsibilities that apply.

A Straightforward Switch with No Downtime

Switch Supplier Without Replacing Your Tank

In most domestic installations, the LPG tank at your property is owned and maintained by your LPG supplier. If you decide to switch supplier, there’s usually no need to replace the tank or make changesto your existing setup.

Instead, the new supplier typically takes ownership of the tank from the outgoing supplier, subject to the necessary safety and access checks. This helps make the switching process straightforward andminimises disruption to your household.

Because the tank remains in place, there should be no interruption to your heating, hot water, cooking or other LPG-powered appliances whilst the switch takes place.

Our experienced team will handle the switch for you, liaising with your existing supplier, and helping to ensure a smooth transition to your new LPG supply.

FAQ

Domestic LPG Frequently Asked Questions

What is domestic LPG?

Domestic LPG is a verstaile off-grid fuel that can be used for heating, hot water, cooking and for other gas appliances in your home. Usually supplied as propane, it is stored as a liquick in a tank outside your property and delivered through pipework to your appliances when needed.

Liquid LPG is stored under pressure. When an appliance requires fuel, LPG vapour leaves the tank, passes through a pressure regulator and travels along the service pipework. Your boiler or appliance then burns the gas to produce heat. You do not need to operate the tank during normal use.

In most cases, the LPG supplier owns the tank and the homeowner uses it under a supply agreement. The supplier is generally responsible for inspecting and maintaining the tank and its fittings. Check your agreement if you are unsure about ownership, rental charges or pipework responsibilities.

Usually no. In most cases, your existing tank will stay in place, with your new supplier taking responsibility for the tank and its ongoing maintenance.

As part of the switching process, we’ll check that your tank is in good condition and meets current safety, siting and access requirements. If anything needs attention, including replacing the tank, we’ll talk you through the options and explain what happens next.

In most cases, no. Your existing LPG tank will stay in place and remain connected throughout the switch so your heating, hot water and cooking can continue as normal. We’ll manage the process for you and let you know when the switch is complete.

You can normally switch when your current exclusivity period has ended or you are approaching your contract end date. Domestic bulk LPG exclusivity periods are generally limited to two years. Check your agreement or ask our team when you may be eligible.

Your tank has a contents gauge showing an approximate percentage. Check it regularly, particularly during cold weather when usage increases. Avoid waiting until the tank is nearly empty before arranging a delivery.

Your household usage and tank size will help determine the right approach.

Yes. Tanks can be installed above or below ground. Above-ground tanks are easier to access but remain visible. Underground tanks offer a less visible option, although the access cover must remain clear. Both types must meet LPG siting, ventilation, separation and tanker-access requirements.

Your LPG is delivered directly to your tank at your property. When the delivery arrives, your driver will connect a hose to the tank’s filling point and safely tranfer the LPG.

Clear access to your property and tank is important, with gates unlocked and the route to the tank kept free from obstructions. Your driver must also have a clear line of sight between the tanker and your LPG tank.

Prices can be influenced by wholesale energy costs, your location, estimated annual usage, tank arrangement and supply agreement. Give us your postcode and expected usage for an accurate, personalised quote.

Do not smoke, light flames or operate electrical switches near a suspected leak. Move people away and contact the LPG emergency service or your supplier immediately. Only turn off the supply if it is safe and you know how. Follow the emergency instructions provided for your installation.
