What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is commonly used in Oakham homes that are not connected to mains gas. Known for its clean burn and efficiency, kerosene is ideal for boilers and central heating systems. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, heating oil remains one of the most cost-effective and dependable fuels for rural and semi-rural properties throughout Rutland.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Oakham

Heating oil tanks in Oakham must comply with UK safety regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment if required. Fire safety rules also apply: tanks should be sited at least 1.8 m from doors, windows, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a solid, non-combustible base. These standards, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, help protect both your property and the local environment.

We recommend Oakham customers schedule regular servicing and tank inspections. Preventative care helps reduce risks, ensures compliance, and keeps heating systems working efficiently all year round.
