What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also called kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in Rutland homes that are not connected to mains gas. Known for its efficiency and clean burn, kerosene is ideal for central heating systems and boilers. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, heating oil remains one of the most economical and dependable fuels for rural properties across the county.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Rutland

Heating oil tanks in Rutland must comply with UK regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment where required. Fire safety rules also apply: tanks must be sited at least 1.8 m from doors, windows, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a stable, non-combustible base. These rules, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, help protect your property and the local environment.

We recommend Rutland customers schedule regular servicing and tank inspections. Preventative maintenance helps reduce risks, ensures compliance, and keeps heating systems running efficiently year after year.
