What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in Chipping Norton homes that are not connected to the mains gas network. Known for its clean and efficient burn, kerosene is ideal for powering boilers and central heating systems. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, it remains one of the most economical and reliable fuels for rural households in West Oxfordshire.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Chipping Norton

Heating oil storage in Chipping Norton must comply with UK safety regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, rules require durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment if necessary. Fire safety standards also apply: tanks must be positioned at least 1.8 m from doors, windows, flues, and boundaries, and set on a stable, non-combustible base. These regulations, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, protect both your property and the environment.

We recommend Chipping Norton customers schedule regular tank servicing and inspections. Preventative care reduces risks, ensures compliance, and helps heating systems remain efficient year after year.
