What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in Banbury homes that are not connected to mains gas. Known for its efficient burn and reliable performance, kerosene is ideal for central heating systems and boilers. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, heating oil remains one of the most cost-effective and dependable fuels for rural and semi-rural households in North Oxfordshire.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Banbury

Heating oil storage in Banbury must comply with UK safety standards. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment if required. Fire safety regulations also apply: tanks should be positioned at least 1.8 m from windows, doors, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a solid, fire-resistant base. These rules, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, help protect both your property and the environment.

We recommend Banbury customers arrange regular tank inspections and servicing. Preventative maintenance helps ensure compliance, reduces risks, and keeps heating systems working efficiently year after year.

Tips for Heating Oil Customers in Banbury

Order early: Place your heating oil order before the winter peak to secure timely delivery and avoid price increases.
Look after your tank: Routine servicing prevents sludge build-up and improves heating efficiency.
Use trusted professionals: Always rely on OFTEC-registered engineers for tank installation, servicing, or replacement work.
