What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in Stamford homes that are not connected to the mains gas grid. Valued for its clean burn and efficiency, kerosene is ideal for central heating systems and boilers. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, it remains one of the most economical and reliable fuels for households in and around Stamford.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Stamford

Heating oil tanks in Stamford must comply with UK regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment where needed. Fire safety rules also apply: tanks should be positioned at least 1.8 m from doors, windows, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a solid base. These standards, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, help safeguard both your property and the local environment.

We recommend Stamford customers schedule regular inspections and servicing of their tanks. Preventative care ensures compliance, improves efficiency, and reduces the risk of costly problems.
