What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also called kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is commonly used in Melton Mowbray homes that are not connected to mains gas. Known for its efficient and clean burn, kerosene is ideal for boilers and central heating systems. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, it remains one of the most economical and dependable fuels for rural households in Leicestershire.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Melton Mowbray

Heating oil storage in Melton Mowbray must comply with UK safety regulations. For tanks under 3,500 litres, rules require strong construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment where necessary. Fire safety standards also apply: tanks should be at least 1.8 m from doors, windows, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a solid, fire-resistant base. These requirements, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, protect your property and the environment.

We recommend that Melton Mowbray customers schedule routine servicing and inspections of their heating oil tanks. Preventative maintenance reduces risks, improves efficiency, and ensures compliance with safety standards.
