What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in homes across Leicester that are not connected to mains gas. Valued for its clean burn and reliable performance, kerosene powers boilers and central heating systems efficiently. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, heating oil remains one of the most economical and dependable fuels for households in and around the city.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Leicester

Heating oil tanks in Leicester must meet strict UK safety standards. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include robust construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment where needed. Fire safety rules also apply: tanks must be located at least 1.8 m from windows, doors, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a stable, fire-resistant base. These regulations, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, protect both your property and the local environment.

We advise Leicester customers to arrange regular servicing and inspections of their tanks. Preventative care helps ensure compliance, improves efficiency, and reduces the risk of costly issues in the future.
