What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in Hertfordshire households that are not connected to mains gas. Known for its clean burn and efficiency, kerosene is ideal for central heating systems and boilers. Sometimes called 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, it remains one of the most cost-effective and dependable heating options for rural and semi-rural homes.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Hertfordshire

Heating oil storage in Hertfordshire must follow strict UK regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment if necessary. Fire safety rules also apply: tanks should be sited at least 1.8 m from windows, doors, flues, and boundaries, and placed on a strong, stable base. These standards, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, protect both your property and the environment.

We recommend Hertfordshire customers schedule regular inspections and servicing of their heating oil tanks. Preventative maintenance helps reduce risks, keeps systems running efficiently, and ensures compliance with safety standards.
