What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also called kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in homes that are not connected to the mains gas grid. In Greater London, properties on the outskirts or in less urbanised areas often rely on heating oil for central heating systems and boilers. Known for its efficiency and clean burn, kerosene — also referred to as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero — remains one of the most cost-effective and dependable fuels for off-grid households.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Greater London

Heating oil tanks in Greater London must comply with strict UK regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment if necessary. Fire safety guidance also applies: tanks should be placed at least 1.8 m from doors, windows, flues, and boundaries, and must sit on a stable, non-combustible base. These rules, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC standards, protect both your property and the environment.

We recommend customers in Greater London arrange routine servicing and inspections. Preventative maintenance helps reduce risks, ensures compliance, and keeps your heating system running efficiently.
