What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also known as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in homes across Saffron Walden that are not connected to mains gas. Valued for its efficiency and clean burn, kerosene powers central heating systems and boilers throughout the area. Often called 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, it remains one of the most cost-effective and reliable fuels for rural properties.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Saffron Walden

Heating oil tanks in Saffron Walden must comply with UK safety regulations. Tanks under 3,500 litres need to be strong, leak-resistant, and fitted with bunding or secondary containment where required. Fire safety rules also apply, requiring tanks to be at least 1.8 m away from windows, doors, flues, and boundaries. These standards, outlined in Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, help protect both your property and the environment.

We recommend Saffron Walden customers arrange regular tank checks and servicing. Preventative care reduces risks, keeps your system efficient, and ensures compliance with safety requirements.
