What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, often referred to as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is a popular choice for homes across Essex that are not connected to mains gas. Known for its clean, efficient burn, kerosene is widely used in central heating systems and boilers. Also recognised as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, it remains one of the most economical and dependable heating options for rural properties.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Essex

Heating oil tanks in Essex must comply with strict UK regulations. For domestic tanks under 3,500 litres, requirements include durable construction, leak resistance, and bunding or secondary containment if needed. Fire safety rules also apply: tanks should be placed at least 1.8 m away from windows, doors, flues, and boundaries. These standards, supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC guidance, help protect your property and the environment.

We encourage Essex customers to arrange routine servicing and inspections to maintain safe, compliant tanks and ensure long-term efficiency of heating systems.
