What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, often referred to as kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is the most common choice for households in Cambridgeshire that are not connected to the mains gas grid. It is known for its clean burn and dependable performance in boilers and central heating systems. Also recognised as 28-second oil, paraffin, or standard kero, heating oil remains one of the most cost-effective fuels for off-grid homes across the county.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Cambridgeshire

UK regulations state that heating oil tanks under 3,500 litres must be strong, leak-resistant, and equipped with bunding or secondary containment if required. Fire safety rules are also important: tanks should be located at least 1.8 m away from flues, windows, doors, and non-fire-rated boundaries. Building Regulations and OFTEC guidelines provide the framework for safe installation, protecting both property and the environment in Cambridgeshire.

We recommend customers across the county arrange routine inspections and servicing to ensure tanks remain compliant, safe, and in good working order. Preventative care helps reduce risks and prolongs the lifespan of heating systems.

Tips for Heating Oil Customers in Cambridgeshire

Plan early: Ordering heating oil before the winter rush helps avoid seasonal price increases and delays.
Maintain your tank: Regular servicing of your boiler and tank improves efficiency and reduces the risk of leaks or sludge build-up.
Use registered engineers: Always choose OFTEC-certified professionals for tank installation, servicing, or replacement.
