What Is Domestic Heating Oil?

Domestic heating oil, also called kerosene or BS 2869 Class C2 fuel, is widely used in Biggleswade homes that are not connected to the mains gas grid. Known for its efficiency and clean burn, kerosene powers boilers and central heating systems across rural Bedfordshire. Sometimes referred to as 28-second oil or standard kero, it remains one of the most cost-effective and reliable fuels for keeping homes warm during the colder months.

Safe Storage & Regulations in Biggleswade

To store heating oil safely, domestic tanks must comply with national regulations. Tanks under 3,500 litres should be sturdy, resistant to leaks, and fitted with bunding or a drip tray where necessary. Fire safety guidance also requires tanks to be sited correctly: at least 1.8 m from windows, doors, and flues, and placed on a suitable base. These rules are supported by Building Regulations and OFTEC recommendations to protect both your property and the local environment.

We encourage Biggleswade customers to have their oil tanks checked regularly to ensure compliance and avoid costly problems. Investing in proper installation and routine inspections provides peace of mind and helps safeguard your heating system for years to come.
