The Government’s flagship energy programme, the Green Deal, faced criticism last week after it emerged that no one was currently benefiting from the loan programme at the heart of the scheme.
Despite the unpopularity of the loans, however, home owners are getting their hands on thousands of pounds of cashback that is being offered as an introductory sweetener to the deal.
The Green Deal Cashback Scheme is a first-come, first-served offer where householders in England and Wales can claim Cashback from Government on energy saving improvements such as upgrading to a condensing oil boiler from non-condensing oil heating or other, ultimately helping households to become more efficient with their home heating oil usage.
Some £125m of taxpayers’ money has been pledged towards the cashback scheme, which is available to everyone, whether or not they choose to use the loan package. Householders can pay upfront for energy-saving improvements and get up to £310 back when replacing their oil boiler.
Government figures published this week show that the cashback, which does not depend on people taking out a Green Deal loan, is proving popular with those who can afford energy improvements themselves. More than 5,000 cashback vouchers, with a total budget commitment of £1.5m, have already been issued. Most of them are for people who wish to replace their boilers, who can get around £310 to help with the cost of the replacement.
For those who want cashback, the best place to start is by booking a Green Deal assessment. Authorised providers are registered with the Green Deal Oversight & Registration Body and listed at greendealorb.co.uk/providers/provider-search. To search for providers registered with the cashback scheme, tick the “Green Deal Cashback Scheme” box within your search. Alternatively, call 0300 123 1234.
Once you have had an assessment and accepted a quote from a Green Deal provider registered with the cashback scheme, you can apply online at gdcashback.decc.gov.uk or ask your assessor to do it for you. You have to apply for the cashback and receive your voucher before you have work carried out.
